Vetiver Grass Cut & Remove
Each year, a small team of volunteer labourers gather at the sewerage treatment area to cut and remove the vetiver grass which has grown prodigiously over the preceding 12 months. Due to very dry conditions followed by months of rain, the grass had not been cut in quite some time, and it showed. Vigorous growth and much material to be cut and removed.
On Friday the 27th February, a small volunteer maintenance team gathered to cut the grass using brush cutters and a hedger. On the next day, the grass was so copius that raking was virtually impossible, so the airfield’s and a private tractor was used to push the grass down the rows. It was then loaded using the 4-in-1 bucket to load on to trucks to be transported to local farmers for use as stock feed and ground cover/mulch.
In years gone by the back-breaking job of loading and removing the grass has been by hand using an assortment of utes and private box trailers. What an incredible difference the heavier machinery made.
A final run over the area with a ride-on mower completed the job for another year. Many many thanks to the selfless volunteers who once again made it all possible.

Do you know of a brush cuttter to cut vetiver? What type of blade to you use?
I have some thick vetiver on the permiter of my south Florida home. (I planted it as a termite repellant.) I would like to chop it down to size. It’s hard work by hand! I am hoping that a heavy duty, hand held trimmer/brush cutter with the right blade would work.
Any suggestions? ty,
