The Weather Station and Airfield Weather Cameras are installed at the approximate centre of the airfield. The wind direction and wind speed sensors are installed 30 feet (9 metres) above ground level, providing reliable wind measurements unobstructed by nearby buildings. The rain gauge and air temperature sensors are mounted 10 feet (3 metres) above ground level with grass underneath.
The four Airfield Weather Cameras are installed 30 feet (9 metres) above ground level, providing an unobstructed 360° panorama of the airfield horizon. The information provided by the weather station and airfield cameras allows an accurate assessment of the current weather conditions at and around the airfield which could greatly assist in-bound pilots in less than perfect conditions.

Thank-you Dick Smith
Dick Smith – Pilot, adventurer, entrepreneur, philanthropist and political activist. The founder of Dick Smith Electronics, Dick Smith Foods and Australian Geographic, and the 1986 Australian of the Year.
As a pilot, in 1982–83 Dick successfully completed the first solo helicopter flight around the world. In 1987 he made the first ever helicopter flight to the North Pole, successful upon his third attempt in his Bell Jetranger III helicopter, which he subsequently donated to the Powerhouse Museum.

Dick Smith has been a vocal advocate for the civil aviation industry in Australia, having been appointed by then Prime Minister Bob Hawke to be Chairman of the Board of the Civil Aviation Authority in February 1990. In October 2015, as a response to escalating regulatory costs, Dick recommended a mass exit from the Australian aviation industry: “I absolutely recommend that people get out of aviation as quickly as they can, sell up their businesses and close down …”
In July 2016 it was announced that he was donating the proceeds of the sale of his beloved Cessna Citation CJ3 to a wide range of organizations including the Rotary Australia Benevolent Society, Scouts Australia, Wild Care Tasmania and the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation, among many other community groups. Watts Bridge Memorial Airfield was a recipient of Dick Smith’s generosity with a donation of $5,000 to be used to enhance aviation safety at the airfield. Dick agreed that a weather station and cameras posting live data to the Watts Bridge website fulfilled his brief.
Watts Bridge Memorial Airfield sincerely thanks Dick and Pip Smith for their most generous donation to the airfield. Thank you Dick!
